Tower new york city and facts about the city

Tower new york city

New York’s skyline is about to get thrown for a loop – literally. Plans have officially been unveiled to construct the world’s first U-shaped skyscraper in new york city, and it’s going to push the limits of modern architecture above the curve.

The Big Bend, once it’s erected and bent at its highest central point, will change the way the skyline of Tower New York City looks now. The Empire State Building with a roof height of 1250 feet (1454 feet including the antenna), which has been dominating the city skyline for years, will be dwarfed once The Big Bend is completed. The U-shaped curved structure will be a whole new tourist attraction in New York, the Big Apple.

If this goes ahead, it would require an unbelievable feat of engineering, which would change the way in which we think about architecture and design.

“…What if we substituted height with length? What if our buildings were long instead of tall?…If we manage to bend our structure instead of bending the zoning rules of New York we would be able to create one of the most prestigious buildings in Manhattan,” Oiio Studio said of the Big Bend on its website.

The residential building would be located on the southern border of Central Park, an area that's known as "Billionaire's Row" and contains many luxury skyscrapers new york city.

How far can we go, and how long can we take it before we say ,“Enough?” We’re talking about the emergence of myriad tall and slender residential skyscrapers, with most of them being on and around West 57th, just south of Central Park. This is an area dubbed Billionaire’s Row due to the fact that the most expensive skyscraper apartments and luxury towers are clustered in this area and there seems to be no shortage in buyers. Already, a few skyscrapers are rising on the street, SHoP Architects’ 111 West 57th Street building and Christian de Portzamparc‘s One57. Jean Nouvel’s 53W53 and Rafael Viñoly’s 432 Park Avenue are both nearby. These skyscrapers in new york city are called “super slenders” due to their extreme base-width-to-height ratios.

Maybe the only way isn’t up after all: newly released concept drawings by a Greek architect for a skyscraper in Manhattan bend more than just minds.

According to architect Ioannis Oikonomou, New York’s zoning laws are prompting developers to explore new ways to maximize a building’s height. To that end, his studio is exploring substituting height with length

“If we manage to bend our structure instead of bending the zoning rules of New York we would be able to create one of the most prestigious buildings in Manhattan. The longest building in the world.”

New York city’s zoning laws have created a peculiar set of tricks through which developers try to maximize their property’s height in order to infuse it with the prestige of a high rise structure.

But what if we substituted height with length? What if our buildings were long instead of tall?

If we manage to bend our structure instead of bending the zoning rules of New York we would be able to create one of the most prestigious buildings in Manhattan. The longest building in the world.

What locals and tourists alike call the Freedom Tower is officially One World Trade Center. But the building has a long list of nicknames, including the 9/11 Observatory, the WTC Observatory, and the 9/11 Tower. Don’t worry -- if you use any of these terms, people will be able to give you directions. But since 2009, its proper, legal name has been One World Trade Center. Poignantly, that is the same official name that the North Tower of the original World Trade Center complex carried.

One World Trade Center has the distinction of being the tallest building in the United States, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, and the sixth-tallest building in the world. It’s the equivalent of 104 standard floors high, but thanks to some levels that boast soaring ceilings, it only has 94 stories.

There is, however, one record it didn’t beat. It’s only the second-tallest freestanding structure in the Western Hemisphere -- the CN Tower in Toronto is taller by about 40 feet. I wouldn’t worry too much about that, since you won’t be pining for any extra height when you visit!

Those signature-filled beams aren’t the only interesting things beneath the building’s surface. The structure is on pace to receive a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification, making it one of the most environmentally sustainable skyscrapers in the world. Part of its eco-friendly design includes ultra-clear glass for maximum natural light and smart interior lighting that automatically dims on sunny days. The building also utilizes wind power and steam heating.

The new facilities include One Café (a casual cafe), One Mix (a bar and small-plates grill), and One Dine (a fine-dining restaurant), and, in general, they get good reviews. If you’re timing your visit to One World Observatory to correspond with the sunset, it would be a really nice treat to stay and enjoy dinner as the light changes around the city. However, most New Yorkers would probably agree that the restaurants are no longer attractions in and of themselves.
